Mikey Hernandez currently resides in Irving, Texas. He started off as a musician and a colorguard performer and later spent over twenty years as a colorguard designer and choreographer. Through colorguard, he was able to explore and convey the mood and storyline of a song through staging, color and motion.
Later on in life, he started painting with oil paints for recreation and enjoyed it as it allowed him to channel his creative side in a different direction. This passion for painting grew immensely, yet the fear of taking the leap to become a professional artist scared him for a short while. Mikey redirected these fears by becoming a high school art and painting teacher, where he was able to grow as both an educator and an artist.
In 2021, he was accepted into the MA/MFA program at the University of Dallas, where he found his voice as a mixed-media artist making large scale, non-representational works on paper. He graduated with a Master of Arts in Art (MA) in 2022 and a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) with an emphasis in Painting in May of 2024. Mikey submits proposals for group and solo exhibitions throughout the US to try and circulate his artwork. He is also seeking residency or artistic-cohort opportunities to help keep his work evolving. Currently, Mikey works at the University of Dallas as the Art Department Technician & Art Preparator. He is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of North Texas where he teaches two Foundation classes.
